The World Is Changing - Is India Ready?

Close your eyes and think about the last time you filled petrol at a pump. You probably noticed the price - maybe complained about it, maybe just accepted it and moved on. But did you wonder why it costs what it does? The answer is not in the refinery down the road or the government's tax policy alone. The real answer is in the Strait of Hormuz - a narrow strip of water between Iran and Oman, barely 33 kilometers wide at its narrowest point - through which nearly 20 percent of the world's oil flows every single day. When tensions rise in that strait, your petrol price rises with it. When a Houthi missile strikes a tanker in the Red Sea, freight costs spike globally, and Indian importers pay more. When OPEC+ nations - led by Saudi Arabia and Russia - decide to cut production in a Vienna conference room, Indian consumers feel it at the pump within weeks.

This is geopolitics. Not an abstract academic discipline. Not something reserved for retired generals and foreign service officers. Not the background noise of a 10 PM news debate. It is the invisible hand that reaches into your pocket, shapes your career opportunities, determines whether your city gets flooded with Chinese imports or benefits from a trade deal with Europe, and decides how safe the borders of your country will be in the decade ahead.

India, in 2025, stands at an extraordinary crossroads. It is the world's most populous nation. The fifth-largest economy by nominal GDP - and the third-largest by purchasing power parity. It has the second-largest army in the world. It is a nuclear power. It is a democracy of 1.4 billion people. And it sits at the geographic center of the most contested strategic theatre of the 21st century: the Indo-Pacific.

Every great power on earth - the United States, China, Russia, the European Union, Japan, the Gulf monarchies - has a position on India. They want something from India, or they want to prevent India from getting something. They are courting New Delhi, pressuring it, sanctioning its partners, offering it technology, or surrounding it with infrastructure debt. The world is not ignoring India. The world is intensely focused on India.

The question is: are Indians equally focused on the world?

That is the question that gave birth to Global Chanakya.

What Is Geopolitics - A Clear Definition for the Modern Indian Reader

The word "geopolitics" comes from two Greek roots - geo (earth) and politikos (of citizens, of the state). At its most fundamental level, geopolitics is the study of how geography shapes political power, and how political power reshapes geography.

The classical geopoliticians of the 19th and early 20th centuries - men like Halford Mackinder, Alfred Thayer Mahan, and Nicholas Spykman - built entire theories of world domination around geography. Mackinder argued that whoever controlled the "Heartland" of Eurasia (roughly modern Russia and Central Asia) would control the world. Mahan argued that naval power and control of sea lanes was the true key to global dominance. Spykman argued that it was the coastal "Rimland" - the littoral zones of Eurasia - that truly mattered.

These men wrote over a century ago. But look at a map of the world today and you will see their theories playing out in real time. China is building artificial islands in the South China Sea - attempting to control the Rimland sea lanes that Spykman identified. Russia's entire strategic anxiety is about controlling its Western approaches - the Heartland buffer that Mackinder described. The United States has spent 80 years building a network of naval bases across the Indo-Pacific - exactly the sea power projection that Mahan prescribed.

Modern geopolitics, however, has evolved far beyond pure geography. Today it encompasses:

Military strategy: Force postures, alliance systems, nuclear deterrence, grey-zone warfare
Economic statecraft: Trade policy, sanctions, technology controls, debt diplomacy
Energy security: Control of pipelines, shipping lanes, and resource supply chains
Technological competition: Semiconductors, AI, quantum computing, space, cyber
Information warfare: Influence operations, propaganda, narrative control
Demographic power: Population trends, migration, diaspora networks
Institutional power: Control of multilateral bodies - the UN, IMF, WTO, WHO

Every one of these dimensions directly affects India. And every one of them will be covered - rigorously, honestly, and from an Indian perspective - on Global Chanakya.

Chanakya: India's Original Grand Strategist

Before we discuss the world of today, it is worth spending a moment on the name we have chosen for this platform - because it is not chosen lightly.

Chanakya - also known as Kautilya or Vishnugupta - lived in the 4th century BCE. He was the prime minister and chief strategist of the Maurya Empire under Chandragupta Maurya. He is credited with writing the Arthashastra - a Sanskrit treatise on statecraft, economic policy, military strategy, and political philosophy that remains one of the most remarkable documents in human history.

What is extraordinary about the Arthashastra is how modern it feels. Chanakya wrote about intelligence networks and espionage - what we would today call signals intelligence and human intelligence. He wrote about economic warfare - using trade embargoes and financial pressure to weaken enemies. He wrote about the importance of a strong treasury as the foundation of military power. He wrote about the "Mandala theory" - a sophisticated model of how a state should manage relationships with its neighbors, neighbors' neighbors, and distant powers. He wrote about the use of propaganda and information to shape public perception.

Replace some of the Sanskrit terminology and the Arthashastra could pass as a modern geopolitical strategy document. The fundamentals of statecraft have not changed in 2,300 years, because human nature has not changed. States still seek security, resources, and dominance. Leaders still calculate interest and power. Alliances are still built on convenience, not friendship.

The name Global Chanakya is a declaration of intent: to bring that ancient Indian tradition of clear-eyed, unsentimental strategic analysis to bear on the complex world of the 21st century. We do not view international affairs through a lens of idealism or wishful thinking. We view it the way Chanakya did - asking always: where does real power lie, what are the genuine interests at stake, and what should India do?

The Five Geopolitical Forces Shaping India's World Right Now

To understand why geopolitics matters to India so urgently in this moment, consider five major forces that are simultaneously reshaping the international order.

1. The US-China Strategic Competition

The defining geopolitical contest of our era is the rivalry between the United States and China. This is not simply a trade dispute or a diplomatic disagreement. It is a systemic competition between two incompatible visions of world order - an American-led liberal international order built after 1945, and a China-led alternative order that Beijing has been patiently constructing for two decades.

China has built the world's largest navy by number of vessels. It has constructed a global infrastructure network through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) spanning over 140 countries. It has become the world's largest trading nation. It has developed advanced capabilities in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and hypersonic missiles. It has established military bases abroad - in Djibouti, and increasingly in the Indo-Pacific. And it has territorial claims against virtually every neighbor it has - including India.

The United States, meanwhile, has responded by building new military alliances (AUKUS, Quad), imposing sweeping technology export controls on China, reshoring semiconductor manufacturing, and dramatically increasing its naval presence in the Indo-Pacific.

India sits directly in the middle of this contest. Both Washington and Beijing want India on their side - or at least not on the other's side. This gives India remarkable diplomatic leverage, but it also creates genuine strategic dangers. Getting this balance wrong could be catastrophic. Getting it right could accelerate India's rise dramatically.

2. The Russia-Ukraine War and the End of the Post-Cold War Order

When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, it did not just start a war in Eastern Europe. It shattered the foundational assumptions of the post-Cold War international order - the idea that territorial conquest was permanently off the table for major powers in Europe, that international institutions could prevent great power aggression, and that economic interdependence produced peace.

For India, this war created an immediate energy opportunity and a long-term strategic dilemma. India bought discounted Russian crude oil at scale - a pragmatic economic decision that saved billions of dollars. But India also had to navigate intense Western pressure, maintain its relationships with both Moscow and Washington simultaneously, and avoid being caught in secondary sanctions. India's "strategic autonomy" - its long-standing policy of non-alignment - was tested as never before.

The war also accelerated the fragmentation of the global economy into competing blocs - a trend with enormous implications for Indian trade, investment, and technology access.

3. The Indo-Pacific's Emergence as the World's Most Critical Theatre

The Indo-Pacific - broadly defined as the area stretching from the eastern coast of Africa to the western coast of the Americas, encompassing the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean - is now the undisputed center of global strategic competition. It contains the world's most important sea lanes, through which trillions of dollars of trade flows annually. It is home to the world's fastest-growing economies. It contains multiple unresolved territorial disputes - the South China Sea, the East China Sea, the Taiwan Strait. And it is where the US-China competition is most intense.

India is not a passive observer of the Indo-Pacific. India IS the Indo-Pacific. The Indian Ocean is named after India for a reason - it sits at the geographic heart of this region. India's coastline stretches over 7,500 kilometers. India has island territories - the Andaman and Nicobar Islands - that sit at the critical chokepoint between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. India's navy is the seventh-largest in the world and growing rapidly.

The emergence of the Indo-Pacific as the world's most contested strategic theatre is, at its core, a story about India's rise - and India's choices about how to use its power.

4. The Technology Revolution and the New Arms Race

The 21st century has added entirely new dimensions to geopolitical competition. The battles of the future - and in many cases the battles of today - are being fought over semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, space assets, undersea cables, and cyber infrastructure.

Semiconductors - the microchips that power everything from smartphones to missiles - have become the new oil. The United States has imposed sweeping export controls to prevent China from accessing advanced chips and the equipment to make them. Taiwan - which produces over 60 percent of the world's most advanced semiconductors at TSMC - has become arguably the most strategically important piece of territory on earth. A Chinese takeover of Taiwan would give Beijing control of the global chip supply, with catastrophic implications for every technologically advanced nation including India.

India is building its own semiconductor ambitions - with government incentives attracting chip manufacturers, and growing investment in AI and space technology. But India is also deeply dependent on foreign technology for its defence systems, telecommunications infrastructure, and digital economy. Managing these technology dependencies while building indigenous capability is one of the most complex strategic challenges India faces.

5. The Middle East Realignment

The Middle East has always been critical to India - as the source of most of India's oil and gas, as home to over 9 million Indian diaspora workers who send billions in remittances annually, and as a region whose instability directly threatens Indian energy security and the safety of Indian citizens abroad.

In recent years, the Middle East has undergone the most significant realignment in decades. The Abraham Accords normalized relations between Israel and several Arab states. The China-brokered Iran-Saudi Arabia détente signaled Beijing's growing role as a Middle East power broker. The Israel-Hamas war that began in October 2023 reignited regional tensions and drew in Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Iran directly. The ongoing civil conflicts in Yemen, Libya, and Sudan add further instability.

For India, this realignment creates both opportunities and risks. The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) - announced at the G20 summit in New Delhi - represents an attempt to build new trade connectivity linking India to Gulf states and Europe. But the same region's instability threatens the energy supplies and the safety of the Indian diaspora on which India's economy partially depends.

How Geopolitics Affects Your Daily Life as an Indian

If the above seems too grand - too distant from your daily reality - let us make it concrete. Here is how geopolitics directly touches the life of an ordinary Indian citizen.

Your Fuel Price

As discussed, oil prices are set by OPEC+ decisions, Middle East tensions, and the US dollar's exchange rate - all geopolitical variables. India imports over 85 percent of its crude oil. Every rupee of exchange rate depreciation and every dollar rise in crude prices costs India billions. The government's ability to subsidize fuel - or its inability to do so - is directly a function of global geopolitics.

Your Job Market

The global technology supply chain restructuring driven by US-China competition is creating enormous opportunities for India. Apple has shifted significant iPhone production to India. Samsung has expanded Indian manufacturing. Dozens of global companies are establishing India as an alternative to China. This is not charity - it is geopolitics creating economic opportunity. The jobs being created in Indian manufacturing today are a direct result of strategic decoupling from China.

Your Digital Security

The Indian government's ban on hundreds of Chinese apps - including TikTok - following the 2020 Galwan Valley clash was a geopolitical decision with direct consequences for every Indian smartphone user. The ongoing debate about Chinese equipment in Indian telecommunications networks (Huawei, ZTE) is a geopolitical debate with direct implications for the privacy and security of every Indian's digital life.

Your Food Prices

The Russia-Ukraine war disrupted global wheat and fertilizer supplies significantly - because both Russia and Ukraine are among the world's largest exporters of both. India, which had been importing fertilizer from Russia and wheat from the Black Sea region, had to scramble to find alternatives. The price of dal, wheat flour, and vegetables in Indian markets was partly determined by a war being fought 5,000 kilometers away.

Your Passport's Power

Whether you can travel visa-free to a country, how easily you can get a work visa, whether your professional qualifications are recognized abroad - all of these are determined by bilateral and multilateral agreements that are fundamentally geopolitical in nature. India's improving diplomatic relationships have gradually strengthened the Indian passport. Further progress depends on continued geopolitical engagement.

Why Most Indians Are Underserved by Existing Media

Given how profoundly geopolitics shapes Indian life, you might expect India to have a rich ecosystem of strategic analysis media. The reality is disappointing.

Television news - both English and Hindi - is almost entirely consumed by domestic political combat. Geopolitics appears on prime time only when there is a border incident or a diplomatic crisis, and even then it is typically framed through the prism of partisan politics rather than genuine strategic analysis. The quality of analysis is poor, the heat is high, the light is minimal.

English-language digital media covers geopolitics more seriously, but much of it imports frameworks and perspectives from Western outlets - The Economist, Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs - that are sophisticated but are written for Western audiences with Western interests at heart. They are not asking what is best for India. They are asking what is best for the liberal international order as Washington or London conceives it.

Hindi-language digital media has grown enormously but has not yet developed a strong tradition of long-form strategic analysis. Speed dominates. Depth is rare.

Think tanks produce excellent research - organizations like the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), and the Takshashila Institution do genuinely rigorous work. But their output is largely academic, often behind institutional barriers, and rarely written in a style accessible to a general educated audience.

Global Chanakya is designed to fill this gap.

We write for the educated Indian who is not a specialist - the engineering student, the MBA, the civil services aspirant, the entrepreneur, the curious professional - who wants to understand the world India inhabits with genuine clarity. We write in clear, modern English. We think from an Indian strategic perspective. We analyze power honestly, without cheerleading for any government or ideology. We ask, always: what does this mean for Bharat?

India's Grand Strategy: The Choices Ahead

What should India's grand strategy be in this complex, rapidly shifting world? This is the central question that Global Chanakya will return to again and again - examining it from every angle, debating different perspectives, and tracking how India's choices play out over time.

Here are the core strategic debates India faces:

Strategic Autonomy vs. Alliance Politics

India has maintained a tradition of "strategic autonomy" since the Nehruvian era - the policy of not formally aligning with any great power bloc. This served India reasonably well through the Cold War. But in today's world, where the US-China competition is forcing countries to choose sides, pure non-alignment may become increasingly untenable. India is already a member of the Quad - a security grouping with the US, Japan, and Australia that has a clear anti-China orientation, even if none of its members say so explicitly. India has also deepened defence ties with the US, signed key foundational defence agreements, and bought American weapons systems. At the same time, India continues to buy Russian weapons, refuses to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine in UN votes, and participates in BRICS and SCO alongside China and Russia. Can India sustain this balance? For how long? These are questions without easy answers - and they are questions Global Chanakya will examine rigorously.

Economic Integration vs. Strategic Decoupling

India's trade deficit with China is over $80 billion annually. India depends on Chinese imports for everything from electronics components to pharmaceuticals to solar panels. Yet China is India's primary strategic adversary, with active territorial disputes, a history of border aggression, and a demonstrated willingness to use economic coercion as a weapon. How does India reduce this dangerous dependency without cratering its own manufacturing sector? How does India attract the global supply chain diversification away from China without simply replacing one dependency with another? These are among the most difficult economic-strategic questions India faces.

Military Modernization vs. Fiscal Constraints

India's defence spending as a percentage of GDP has actually declined in recent years - hovering around 2 percent - even as China has dramatically increased its military capabilities and Pakistan has acquired new weapons systems. India's military faces aging equipment, indigenous development programs that run chronically over schedule and over budget, and a force structure designed for a different era. Modernizing Indian military power to the level required by India's strategic ambitions is a generational challenge that will require sustained political will and fiscal commitment.

Neighbourhood First vs. Great Power Ambitions

India's neighbourhood - Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, the Maldives, and Afghanistan - is uniquely challenging. Every one of these countries has been, at some point in recent years, either in political crisis, under Chinese influence, or in direct conflict with Indian interests. India cannot become a great power if it cannot manage its own backyard. Yet India's neighbourhood policy has had significant failures - Sri Lanka's dramatic turn toward China under the Rajapaksas, Nepal's occasional diplomatic hostility, the Maldives' 2023 election of a president openly hostile to India. Getting South Asia right is a prerequisite for India's global ambitions.

The Indo-Pacific: India's Strategic Opportunity of the Century

Of all the geopolitical theatres that matter to India, none is more consequential than the Indo-Pacific. And in the Indo-Pacific, India has natural advantages that no amount of money or political will can manufacture for other countries - geography, history, and the fact that the ocean itself bears India's name.

The Indian Ocean handles approximately 80 percent of global seaborne oil trade and 50 percent of global container traffic. Nine of the world's ten busiest shipping lanes pass through the Indian Ocean. The critical chokepoints - the Strait of Hormuz, the Strait of Malacca, the Bab-el-Mandeb, the Mozambique Channel - are either in India's extended neighborhood or are directly relevant to Indian energy security.

China recognizes this. Beijing has invested heavily in what Indian strategic analysts call the "String of Pearls" - a network of Chinese-built or Chinese-financed ports and infrastructure projects stretching from the South China Sea through the Indian Ocean to the Arabian Sea and East Africa. Gwadar in Pakistan, Hambantota in Sri Lanka, Chittagong in Bangladesh, Kyaukpyu in Myanmar, and Djibouti on the Horn of Africa - this network represents a systematic Chinese effort to build influence and potential military access around India's maritime periphery.

India's response has been the development of its own "necklace of diamonds" strategy - building port partnerships, security relationships, and maritime domain awareness networks with island nations and coastal states across the Indian Ocean. India has developed strategic infrastructure in Mauritius, the Seychelles, Madagascar, and Oman. India's Sagarmala project is modernizing Indian ports. The Indian Navy is expanding rapidly.

The Indo-Pacific is where India's strategic future will be decided. Global Chanakya will cover every development in this theatre with the depth and consistency it deserves.

Global Chanakya's Editorial Promise

We want to be honest with you about what we are and what we are not.

We are not a neutral wire service that simply reports facts without analysis. Analysis requires perspective, and perspective means making judgments. We will make judgments - about what matters, what the evidence shows, what India should do.

But we are committed to intellectual honesty. We will follow evidence where it leads, even when it contradicts our priors. We will present multiple perspectives on genuinely contested strategic questions. We will distinguish clearly between established facts, informed analysis, and speculation. We will correct our errors when we make them. We will not let political loyalties - to any party or ideology - distort our analysis. And we will never manufacture outrage or sensationalism to drive engagement.

We believe that India deserves a strategic media culture that takes its readers seriously - that treats them as intelligent adults capable of engaging with complexity, nuance, and uncertainty. That is the culture we intend to build.

Our coverage will be organized around India's core strategic interests:

Security and Defence: Tracking India's military capabilities, border situations, the evolution of Indian defence technology and procurement, and the broader security environment
Great Power Competition: Deep analysis of US-China rivalry, Russia's role, and India's navigation of the great power contest
The Indo-Pacific: Comprehensive coverage of the region that matters most to India's strategic future
Economic Statecraft: Trade, investment, sanctions, technology controls, and India's economic diplomacy
Energy and Climate: The geopolitics of energy transition, India's energy security, and the strategic implications of climate change
Neighbourhood: Deep, honest analysis of India's South Asian relationships - without cheerleading or excessive pessimism
Intelligence and Grey Zone: Understanding the hybrid warfare, influence operations, and covert competition that defines much of modern strategic rivalry

A Word on Premium Access

Producing this quality of analysis requires time, expertise, and resources. Good strategic journalism - like good intelligence - is not cheap. Reporters who understand the nuance of the Taiwan Strait situation, analysts who can interpret a Chinese naval exercise, writers who can translate complex deterrence theory into clear English - these are rare and valuable people.

To sustain the quality we are committed to, Global Chanakya operates a premium model. All our content will eventually be publicly accessible - we believe strongly in broad access to strategic information. But Premium subscribers get every article 24 hours before it goes public.

In a world where information advantage translates directly into real advantage - in examinations, in business decisions, in professional conversations, in investment choices - that 24-hour window is not trivial. Whether you are preparing for the UPSC Civil Services examination, working in a field where global affairs matter, or simply someone who wants to stay genuinely informed rather than reactively catching up, Premium ensures you are always ahead of the conversation.

At ₹19 for 7 days, it is priced to be accessible to every serious Indian reader, not just to corporate subscribers. We want students, young professionals, and curious citizens to be able to afford it - because we believe that a more strategically aware Indian citizenry is itself a national asset.

The Bigger Picture: Why a Strategically Literate India Matters

There is a reason that the most powerful nations in the world invest heavily in strategic education - not just for their elites, but for their broader populations. A citizenry that understands geopolitics makes better democratic choices about foreign policy. It is harder to manipulate with nationalist emotion when people understand the actual strategic trade-offs involved. It generates better political leaders, better diplomats, better military officers, better business leaders, and better civil servants.

India has produced extraordinary strategic thinkers - from Chanakya to Nehru to K. Subrahmanyam to Shivshankar Menon. But strategic literacy has not spread broadly enough through Indian society. Too many Indians learn about the world reactively - responding to crises rather than anticipating them, absorbing narratives rather than analyzing them, consuming emotion rather than generating thought.

As India rises - as it becomes the third-largest economy, as its military power grows, as its diplomatic weight increases - the quality of Indian strategic thinking becomes a matter of genuine national consequence. A great power needs a strategically literate population. The decisions India makes in the next two decades - about its alliances, its military posture, its technology policy, its neighbourhood relationships, its role in multilateral institutions - will shape the lives of Indians for generations.

Global Chanakya exists because we believe that better analysis leads to better decisions. And better decisions, compounded over years and decades, lead to a stronger, more secure, more prosperous India.

Welcome to Global Chanakya

This is our first article. It is a statement of intent - what we are, what we believe, and what we intend to build. From here, the analysis gets specific. We will go deep into the South China Sea disputes. We will dissect India's defence modernization challenges. We will analyze the Iran-Saudi Arabia-Israel strategic triangle. We will examine the implications of AI-powered warfare for Indian security. We will cover every major geopolitical development that matters to India - with the rigor, honesty, and India-first perspective that Chanakya would recognize.

The world is entering a period of profound strategic flux. The rules-based international order is under pressure. Great powers are competing aggressively. New technologies are rewriting the rules of conflict and commerce. Old certainties are dissolving. New alignments are forming.

India stands at the center of it all - a civilization-state of extraordinary antiquity and growing modern power, navigating the most complex geopolitical environment in its modern history.

We intend to cover every chapter of this story.

Welcome to Global Chanakya. The analysis begins now.

India's Strategic Awakening: Why Geopolitics Is No Longer Just for Diplomats
